Tiivistelmä
Today’s fast paced business environment requires organizations to keep up with business and market related changes, therefore it is essential for them to design and evaluate their business models (BM). Literature on the concept of BMs is in abundance, yet there are limited studies that focus on BM design and measurement of its performance, particularly in the context of networked enterprises. This thesis aims to fill the gap by developing a conceptual framework that relates performance measurement (PM) metrics to BM concepts. The framework can be used to design and estimate the performance of networked BMs and is empirically applied to a real-life business case.

The first stage of this research involved a literature analysis of the fields of BMs and PM in the context of networked enterprises, to synthesize them into a BM metric repository. The repository consists of BM components having corresponding sets of performance metrics, which are further categorized by organizational levels. The motivation behind the repository was to overcome the research gap regarding performance metrics for networked BMs. The second stage of this research involved application of the repository to an IT startup. First, a workshop was conducted to design the company’s BM and to highlight metrics that are currently in use. Next, the created artifacts underwent two rounds of evaluation. Initially, an internal review took place among the management team of the IT company, and then an interview was conducted with them to evaluate and improve the existing BM and metrics. The results were reported in the form of a BM canvas and following the structure of the metric repository.

Based on the study’s findings, several BM components and performance metrics for networked enterprises were identified, categorized and presented in a BM metric repository. Moreover, the repository was applied to an IT startup to (re)design their BM and evaluate their metrics. Theoretically, this research contributes to both BM and PM literature by combining business modelling and performance estimation in a repository. Furthermore, the research findings resonate with various authors and their views on BM design, innovation and change, learning and planning, evaluating and improving BMs. Practically, this thesis contributes to companies seeking to design or re-design their BM and incorporate or improve their metrics. Additionally, it is beneficial for business managers and analysts as it helps in performance estimation of networked BMs.
