Tiivistelmä
The Internet of Things (IoT) can be seeing as a vision in which the Internet extends into the real world thereby embracing everyday objects or things. Physical objects, things or devices can now be connected to the virtual world, and be controlled remotely or act as physical access points to Internet services. The challenge of interoperability of devices using different technology could be solved through the middleware layer of internet of things architecture. In this work, remote controlled gate is implemented through case study of Kaa middleware IoT platform. An approach for making the implementation of IoT less costly, seamless for developers, teachers, students, individuals and industries.

Middleware for internet of things is a mechanism which joins all the connected devices and applications in order to enhance smooth communication in an internet of things network. This mechanism, called middleware plays a significant role in the emerging connected world. Such middleware that will achieve the goal of making internet of things a possibility has to be affordable, easily tailored for any business applications, handles millions of devices, scales elastically, straightforward to integrate hardware, pre-integrated with data management systems and easy to use and learn by students and interested individuals or companies.

Kaa is an open-source platform that is flexible and can be used to build, manage and integrate IoT applications. Smart products and devices can be connected together in an IoT network using the communication, control and interoperability approach of Kaa middleware platform. Kaa platform is a robust and feature rich such that major work has been done in the platform at the back-end thereby, allowing vendors, students and developers to concentrate on maximizing their time to speed up IoT product development.

Remote controlled gateway is implemented using hardware devices, mobile phone and Kaa middleware platform to prototype a typical case of home remote control system which can be scaled to a smart home network system. A smart house is an automated home which allows lightings, alarms, cameras, washing machine and other appliances in the home to communicate with one another and also be monitored and controlled remotely. In the remote controlled gateway system implementation of this thesis, an android device is used to control functionality of a gateway.
