The Utilization of Crude Language in TJ Klune's Novel Ravensong

Abstract

TJ Klune’s novel Ravensong is from a series called Green Creek. This thesis focuses on Ravensong and its crude usage of language. Swearing is a major phenomenon considered in the thesis. The study utilizes a categorisation system of crude utterances and divides a chosen amount of excerpts from the novel into five groups. I have developed the system to determine different functions of the use of crude language, which is shown in the five categorisation groups. The excerpts are taken both from the narration and the dialogue of the novel. In the thesis I discuss the functions of the excerpts and the underlying emotions in them. Additionally, I carry out character analysis of the main character Gordo Livingstone. The character’s past and present are pondered, and their connections are considered. Crude language is again a significant element in the analysis of the character. Though Gordo is a person of major interest in the research, he is not at all the only character considered in the categorisation system or the character analysis. The study considers both narration and dialogue in its research. The overall thesis is descriptive and qualitative in nature. The excerpts fit into their categories, but there is still overlapping. There were several expressed emotions within the text examples, such as hostility, annoyance, and neutrality. It is discovered how factors behind Gordo’s character consist of his trauma and the way he grew up connected to a crude environment.
