Tiivistelmä
Food consumption is closely connected to both human well-being and broader sustainability challenges, as everyday food choices can have long-term environmental, social and health related impacts. Family life represents an important context in which food habits, routines and values are shaped through everyday inter-actions and practices. Within this context, parents with young children play an important and significant role in influencing food-related habits, routines and decisions during a particularly important stage of children’s development. At the same time, many food choices are embedded in everyday life: where routines, responsibilities and available resources influence decision-making. Understanding how parents make decisions around these everyday food practices can provide valuable insights into the relationship between family life, sustain-ability and future-oriented thinking.
This master’s thesis examines how parents with young children relate sustainable food consumption to future-oriented thinking within everyday family life. It explores how parents’ food related views, values and practices can be understood through the five dimensions of Futures Consciousness: Time Perspective, Agency Beliefs, Openness to Alternatives, Systems Perception, and Concern for Others. It further explores the tensions between ideals and practice, as well as parents’ orientations toward sustainability, healthy eating and the future which may relate to the potential transmission of both values and food-related habits within the family context. The study is explorative and adopts a qualitative research approach based on semi-structured interviews with parents of pre-school children. The collected data were analysed using qualitative content analysis, with the five-dimensional model of Futures Consciousness serving as the conceptual framework and qualitative tool.
The analysis suggests that Futures Consciousness operates as a dynamic and context-dependent framework in everyday family life, where different dimensions interact in varying configurations. While future-oriented values and concern are present across participants’ reflections, their expression in daily practices is shaped by both individual orientations and situational conditions.
The study suggests also that future research could expand the empirical scope beyond qualitative interviews by including longitudinal studies, observational methods, or comparative samples across different cultural and socioeconomic contexts. Overall, the thesis explores the potential of Futures Consciousness as a framework for examining everyday sustainability-related practices in family contexts. It offers insights into how future-oriented thinking and sustainability are embedded, negotiated and sometimes constrained within everyday family life.
