Digital Social Reading Engagement: A Systematic Review of Research on Reading in Online Affinity Spaces

This study examines how reading engagement in Digital Social Reading (DSR) affinity spaces has been conceptualised and operationalised across adolescent literacy research. The review further explores how literacy outcomes have been conceptualised and operationalised and attempts to identify indicators that DSR engagement might be integrated into reading instruction within formal school contexts. The theories upon which the study is based are the four dimensions of reading engagement (McGeown & Conradi Smith, 2024) and Affinity Space theory (Lammers et al., 2012; Oliveri & Carpenter, 2024). An integrative systematic review and thematic synthesis approach was adopted. The search process was conducted on 5 databases, from which 17 empirical studies, published between 2015 and 2026, were selected based on the eligibility criteria. The findings revealed that DSR engagement is multidimensional and interconnected across affective, behavioural, cognitive, and social dimensions of engagement. Engagement in various affinity spaces was shaped by community
design, platform affordances, algorithmic mediation, and participation structures. The reviewed studies indicated that DSR engagement was impactful to adolescents’ reading motivation, habits, and reader identity development. The study identified that DSR engagement was oriented towards the act of reading, platform participation, and the integration of both. The study concludes that DSR engagement represents an expansion of how adolescents perform their reading practices in online affinity spaces. It argues for a more critical understanding of literacy, especially what counts as reading engagement, the influence of the algorithm, gender differences, and unequal visibility in DSR reading cultures. Finally, the review recommends that educational stakeholders adopt the principles of different DSR practices into the curriculum and classroom. Pedagogical implications and further areas of adolescent DSR engagement and literacy research are discussed.
