| dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines loot boxes as a form of probability-based monetisation at the intersection of digital item economies, consumer behaviour, and multi-level governance. Drawing on a synthesis of evidence, it explores how the design of randomised rewards, reveal rituals and rarity framing sustain engagement and spending. The analysis differentiates between various motivational profiles, ranging from entertainment and collection to competitive advantage and social signalling. Additionally, it explains why players may misjudge costs, odds, and expected outcomes in uncertain situations. In terms of gover nance, the thesis maps the institutional ’border zone’ between gambling law, consumer protection and platform rules. It demonstrates how competence fragmentation and definitional thresholds can lead to different legal outcomes for similar mechanics. The thesis evaluates policy options, such as probability transparency, spending frictions, youth safeguards, and enforcement strategies. It assesses their likely effectiveness and limitations when implemented in isolation. It also discusses industry self-regulation and the global incentives that shape disclosure compliance. Ultimately, it concludes that effective regulation requires a coordinated approach that addresses the behavioural risks inherent in the design of these systems, as well as the vulnerabilities of consumers’ rights in fragile digital ownership and live-service markets. | |
