Love with Flaws : A Qualitative Study on LGBTQ+ Representation in South Korean Drama

Abstract

In this thesis, I discuss how LGBTQ+ characters are represented in a selection of four different Korean dramas. I go through Korean LGBTQ+ issues in general, as well as the impact media representation and stereotyping has on minorities. This study was conducted by qualitative methods, with thematic analysis being the guiding method. In this paper, I present a set of scenes and dialogues that appeared in the drama selection, and then move on to analyse them based on my thematic analysis process. As more LGBTQ+ characters appear in K-drama, I wanted to take a look at how they are represented; indeed, there is representation, even though it is lacking and flat from time to time. And, even though the LGBTQ+ situation has slowly improved in South Korea, there is still a lot to be done in improving the situation. This study shows the importance of media representation in issues regarding sexual and gender minorities.
