This thesis examines the predictive power of short interest in equity markets and investigates the conditions under which it conveys information about future stock returns. While prior literature has studied the relationship between short interest and subsequent returns, the extent to which this relationship depends on short-sale constraints and firm characteristics remains less explored. This study aims to identify the environments in which short interest is most informative. Using monthly data on U.S. equities from 2017 to 2024, portfolios are constructed based on different levels of short interest, and the subsequent abnormal returns are estimated from the Carhart four-factor model. To capture variation in short-sale constraints, portfolios are further sorted by market capitalization and days-to cover. In addition, market-to-book ratio is used to examine whether the informativeness of short interest differs between value and growth stocks. The analysis is conducted both across the full sample and at the industry level. The results indicate that short interest is informative primarily at the extreme end of the distribution when considered in isolation. However, conditioning on firm characteristics significantly reduces this concentration in the extreme tail and enhances the informativeness of short interest. Stronger patterns of negative abnormal returns are observed among stocks with low market capitalization and high days-to-cover, consistent with binding short-sale constraints. Short interest is also found to be substantially more informative among value stocks than growth stocks, suggesting that short sellers possess a stronger informational advantage in firms with weaker fundamentals. On equally weighted portfolio specification, constrained stocks with extreme short interest underperform by a statistically significant 430 basis points per month, whereas value stocks with parallel portfolio setting short interest underperforms monthly by a significant 660 basis points. Overall, the findings highlight that the informativeness of short interest is both constraint- and stock value context dependent.
Tutkimuksessa hyödynnetään kuukausittaista aineistoa Yhdysvaltain osakemarkkinoilta vuosilta 2017–2024. Tasapainotetussa (equal-weighted) portfoliorakenteessa rajoitteiden alaiset, erittäin korkean short interestin osakkeet alituottavat tilastollisesti merkitsevästi noin 430 peruspistettä kuukaudessa, kun taas vastaavassa asetelmassa matalan market-to-book-ration omaavien arvo-osakkeiden alituotto on noin 660 peruspistettä kuukaudessa.
